I have been back and forth across Kansas about 4 or 5 times in my life. Always from behind the wheel
of a car loaded down with bikes and gear heading to the mountains of Colorado. But in between stopping my wife from crying out of Interstate induced boredom, wanting to stop to see the “two headed calf,” and seeing if I could get a 4 cylinder Honda to stay over 100 mph without blowing up, I would stare out into the rolling hills with amazement. So much space, so much more beauty than I could have imagined.
It’s been several years since I made my last trip across Kansas, but the idea of the adventures that could be had with all that open space and dirt stuck in the back of my mind. So when I started reading about the Dirty Kanza 200 a few years ago, my interest was most certainly peaked. But the reality of life can sometimes get in the way of “peaked interest” and actually DOING an event.
Luckily through this XXC gig and my own attempts at racing I’ve got to know several talented folks
(on and off the bike) across the country who have done the Dirty Kanza 200, and planned on doing it in 2010. Folks who love to race on ANY type of dirt, even 200 miles of Kansas gravel! I knew MY want to read their race reports and see their photos from this year’s race would have the next issue of XXC
(#8 due in late July) a little too DK200 heavy for some. So I figured why not just put all those DK stories in one issue? And with that the XXC Magazine DK200 Special Edition was born.
I wanted an issue that will tell some readers what the Kanza is all about, and remind others of the epic nature of the race. And for those who DID the race I hope it serves as a memento of the physical and mental limits they pushed through in attempts to finish the race, and in some cases WIN the race.
XXC thanks issue contributors: Mark “Guitar Ted” Stevenson, Jason “GNAT” Boucher, Emily Brock,
Eric “Adventure Monkey” Benjamin, and Corey Godfrey for sharing their stories and photos from the 2010 Dirty Kanza 200.
I hope you enjoy this special Dirty Kanza edition of XXC Magazine as much as I have. You can download the PDF eMag for just 99¢, or purchase the print version at MagCloud.com for only $5.50.
The mag is also available to read online at issuu.com.
